Cabinet approves making APEDA statutory body

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Registration of Basmati rice and similar other geographical indicators under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999 can now be initiated by APEDA, which will now be effectively empowered to protect the Geographical Indication in India and abroad.

This has been made possible with the Union Cabinet's approval for amending the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act (APEDA), vesting it with the statutory authority for registration and protection of intellectual property rights or similar rights (including Geographical Indications) in the special product names in India and elsewhere, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters here today after the Cabinet meeting.
