Posters appear in Pondy seeking release of life convicts

Puducherry, Sep 16 (UNI) Family members of life convicts lodged in central prison here have urged the territorial administration to release them on compassionate grounds as was done by the Tamil Nadu government.

With the Tamil Nadu government releasing 1,405-odd life convicts to mark the birth centenary of C N Annadurai, family members of the prisoners here put up posters all over the town, seeking the Puducherry administration to show compassion to the life convicts languishing in prison and release them.

The posters --'requesting rehabilitation on the basis of compassion'-- urged the territorial administration to release the life convicts, who had completed seven years in prison. Why should life convicts here remain for 14 years in jail when the punishment under IPC was equal to all and the convicts released by the Tamil Nadu government after seven years, asked in the posters.

The relatives of the prisoners are expecting the new government to initiate action in this regard.
