Valson Thampu appointed St Stephen's principal

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Former acting Principal of St Stephen's College Valson Thampu was today named as Principal of the prestigious college after months of bickering over the appointment due to internal squabbles and legal tangles.

Dr Thampu, who taught English in the Delhi University college, was earlier its acting Principal/Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Later, after he was selected by the college committee to head the institution as its Pricipal, objections were raised over his 'qualification' for the coveted job. Protestors alleged his Ph D was not valid after which he resigned.

The University Grants Commission later intervened in the matter and said that his Ph D was indeed valid.

The Delhi High Court also prohibited the Delhi University from interfering in the selection process of the college due to its minority character, which further strenghtened Dr Thampu's case.

After this the college once again started the process of selecting its principal last week and Dr Thampu was one of the candidates interviewed.

His selection was officially announced today.
