One killed in attempted jail break in Meghalaya

Shillong, Sep 13 (UNI) One of the jail wardens of Meghalaya's Jowai district jail was stabbed to death this morning even as the security forces successfully foiled an attempt to escape by Under Trial Prisoners (UTP), a police official said.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at around 0730 hours when a group of UTPs stormed the jail's office campus and later stabbed the jail warden with a sharp weapon.

The jail warden, who died on the spot, has been identified as Lala Ray.

''One of our jail wardens died after a group of UTPs attempted to escape the jail from the main gate. However, none of the UTPs managed to make a breakthrough owing to the quick reaction of the wardens,'' Inspector General of Prisons Anil K Pradhan told UNI over the phone.

Mr Pradhan said police are still investigating the incident and a case has been registered.
