Minor girl's body recovered from canal, villagers protest

Fatehgarh Sahib, Sep 13 (UNI) The body of a minor girl of village Sohavi in Fatehgarh Sahib district, which was allegedly thrown away in a stream by her lover a week ago, was recovered in Bhakra Canal at Jalsuhi head near Rajpura.

The Khamano police has registered a case against the accused Sukhbir Singh and his accomplice servant Surinder Patel on the statement of the girl's father, Ajmer Singh.

The accused was arrested by police and produced in a Fatehgarh Sahib-based court.

The villagers, who cremated the body today, lodged their protest against the accused and also raised slogans against a local leader of the village, who they alleged was helping the accused.

The villagers had also waved placard condemning the accused.

Sources alleged that ''the 17-year-old girl had illicit relations with Sukhbir Singh, who, was already married and had promised to wed her soon. On the night of September 6, she reportedly met him near her house and since then she went missing.

The next morning, her family informed the police and complained that she might have been lured away by Sukhbir Singh.
