Oil companies send relief to flood hit Bihar

New Delhi, Sept 12 : Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora oday flagged off relief material contributed by the oil companies for flood-hit Bihar.

The relief material includes fuels like kerosene, free LPG for community kitchens in relief camps, solar lanterns, blankets, candles, matchboxes, ORS (Oral Re-Hydration Solutions), milk powder and cooking utensils.

Deora said his ministry is in touch with people in flood affected areas and promised more relief, if needed.

"There are arrangements there in the camps to distribute the material for the flood victims. We are in touch with the people there. What else they will be needed we will provide them," said Deora.

Each public sector oil company will be taking up medical relief work in onef the five worst flood affected districts. Oil India (OIL) will undertake medical relief work in Supol district, Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) in Madhepura, Oil and Natural Gasommission (ONGC) in Araria, Indian Oil (IOC) in Saharsa and Bharat Petroleumn Purnea.

IOC has been designated as coordinating PSU in consultation with local administrative for the relief works to undertaken in the flood-affected areas.

Floods have caused large-scale loss of life and property in six districts of the state since August, following an over 2,000-metre breach in the Kosi river embankment in neighbouring Nepal. People in Bihar have witnessed the worst floods in living memory. The catastrophe has taken a toll of over 90 lives and more than three million people have been displaced.
