CPRI team bags National Potato Award
Shimla, Sep 12 (UNI) A team of Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) Shimla has bagged Dr S Ramanujam Award for excellent potato research work for the year 2004-07.
The prestigious award for scientific research was bagged by Dr SV Singh and his team for developing improved varieties and technologies for round-the-year uninterrupted supply of potatoes to the processing industries.
Dr Singh and his team comprising of Dr SK Pandey, Dr Dinesh Kumar, Dr RS Marwaha, Dr Parveen Kumar and Dr BP Singh, all from CPRI, has designed a systematic scheme for providing excellent quality processing-grade potatoes to the chipping industries by staggering the planting of potatoes in different crop seasons and in diverse agro-climatic zones of the country coupled with improved potato storage technologies.
The team is credited with the release and development of India's first four chipping varities namely, Kufri Chisona-1, Kufri Chipsona -2, Kufri Chipsona-3 and Kufri Himsona in hills.
The team has also got prestigious Indian Council for Agriculture Reserch (ICAR) team award for year 1998-2000 for outstanding work on potato production and improvement.
