Omar, Geelani and Yaseen under house arrest

Srinagar, Sep 5: Chairmen of both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Moulvi Omar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Yaseen Malik have been put under house arrest to prevent them from leading the Friday, Sep 5 demonstrations in the valley.

Mirwaiz Omar and Malik remained under house arrest since their release early on September 1 while Mr Geelani was put under arrest since on Thursday, Sep 4. A spokesman for the moderate HC advocate Shahidul Islam told that a large number of security forces and police personnel remained deployed outside the Nigeen resident of the Mirwaiz since September 1 when he was released after eight-days detention. He said Mr Malik was also put under house arrest from the day he was released.

However, Mr Geelani who was admitted to hospital remained free. Mr Geelani had announced that he will offer Friday prayers at holy Hazratbal shrine on Friday, Sep 5. However, he had asked people to protest in their respective areas after Friday prayers. But he appealed to people to hold peaceful protests and indulge in stone pelting. Official sources said a large number of police personnel had been deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani who has been informed that he has been put under house arrest.
