Mayawati urges PM to constitute committee for flood solution

Patna, Sep 5 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today urged the Prime Minister to constitute a high level committee for a permanent solution to the perennial floods in North Bihar.

Speaking to newspersons here before an aerial survey of the affected areas, the BSP supremo said despite several requests the Centre failed to take any 'concrete measure' to find a permanent solution to the natural calamity wreaking havoc in North Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh every year.

''The Prime Minister should constitute a high level committee to explore ways of taming the rivers causing havoc in Bihar and eastern UP every year besides damaging property worth billions of rupees and claiming precious human lives,'' Ms Mayawati said. She claimed that the Centre should bear the expenditure required for taming the rivers.

''If suitable measures are taken to check the fury of rivers, it will not only save human lives and property but also go a long way in generating hydro-electricity,'' she pointed out.

Ms Mayawati donated Rs 11 crores to the Bihar Chief Minister's relief fund.

She said IAS officers posted in UP and the state administrative officers would donate a day's salary to express solidarity with the millions of Bihar flood victims.
