Punjab Govt withdraws nod to Central status to Panjab Univ

Chandigarh, Sep 1 (UNI) The Punjab Government has withdrawn its clearance given to the Union Government for the the grant of Central University status to Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The state government has taken this decision in cognizance of "misgivings in a section of the intelligentia" regarding the grant of Central University status.

Disclosing this Media Advisor to Chief Minister Harcharan Bains said that the Chief Minister had written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh withdrawing the state government's earlier clearance to the proposal given through an official communication on August 26.

However, he said the state government would continue to pursue with the Centre its demand for having two Central Universities in the State, including a world class university at Amritsar.
