Left in Puducherry plan joint demos against Orissa attacks

Puducherry, Sep 1 (UNI) Condemning the attack on Christians in Orissa following the killing of VHP leader Lakshmananda Saraswathi Swami, the Puducherry unit of CPI(M) today demanded that the Centre and the government of that state must intervene and restore normalcy.

Adressing a press conference here, CPM secretary V Perumal said they should also take necessary steps to provide adequate compensation to the affected.

He sdaid CPI(M) would organise a demonstration here tomorrow condemning the attacks.

Meanwhile, taking strong exception to the unscheduled power-cuts in the union territory, Mr Perumal said the one hour cut in the town, and several hours in villages affected the studies of school children. The industrial units here were forced to close down for two days in a week affecting the labourers.

He allleged that political leaders who used to shuttle between Puducherry and New Delhi seemed to have ignored the problem and added Puducherry could tide over the situation if the allocation of power by the central grid was increased.

The CPI(M) would organise demonstrations infront of all the electricity department offices in all commune panchayats on September 4 or 5.

Pressing for a five point charter of demands, including price hike, the CPI(M) and the CPI would jointly organise agitations here soon, he added.
