Corporate houses to improve air quality in Durgapur
Kolkata, Aug 27 (UNI) Durgapur will be the first city in the country to improve air quality through corporate commitment as West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) has decided to take an innovative approach to contain visible emission from the industries.
Official sources here today said a high profile meeting would be held in Durgapur on August 29 to decide the future course of action.
The meeting would be attended by all the corporate heads of the industries in the region and addressed by WBPCB Chairman A N Basu and M Meena, principal secretary, Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal besides other officials.
Durgapur was recently declared as a critically polluted area by Central Pollution Control Board, New Delhi, because of unacceptable air quality, contributed mainly from thermal power and steel plants.
Recent surge in the growth of steel industries especially sponge iron and ferro alloys manufacturing units in Durgapur and adjoining areas had aggravated the pollution problem in the region, sources added.
