Assam: Evicting illegal settlers sparks tensions
Guwahati, Aug 25: The Meghalaya police on Monday, Aug 25 tried to remove some illegal settlers from the Khanapara area on the Assam-Meghalaya border, sparking tension in the area. Assam police sources said a team of Meghalaya police came to the Khanapara and damaged the property of Nepalis living in the area and also assaulted the settlers, including women. The area is, however, not disputed as it is under Meghalaya's jurisdiction.
Later, Assam police arrived on the site and took control of the situation. Meanwhile, eye witnesses alleged that the settlers were not given any notice to evict the area and land mafias had used the police forces against them.
