Ban on 'provocative' SMS to continue in J

New Delhi, Aug 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed that the ban on 'provocative' Short Message Service (SMS) in Jammu and Kashmir will continue.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam extended the ban on the request of the state government, which had come in appeal against the order of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court that had quashed the order of the district administration vide which the ban was imoposed keeping in view the disturbed situation in the state.

The state government had pleaded before the apex court that ban has to be continued as provocative SMS are adding fuel to the fire in the state, which is facing a difficult situation in view of the ongoing agitation for the restoration of 100 acre of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shire Board. The Kashmir valley is also under the grip of separatist uprising.

The apex court agreed with the contention of the state government and extended the bench till the next date of hearing.
