Alert in Patiala distt as water level rises in Ghaggar

Patiala, Aug 16 (UNI) The district administration tonight sounded an alert in the Patran and Samana sub divisions of the district following an increase in the water level of the Ghaggar river near Khanouri village.

An official spokesman said here tonight that the water level recorded at Khanouri was 750 feet, just three feet below the mark where it would start overflowing. The spokesman said that 13,500 cusecs of water was flowing in this seasonal river.

The increase in the water level was attributed to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Markanda, Tangri and Pachidara seasonal rivers that join the Ghaggar near Samana.

State Irrigation Secretary Suresh Kumar taking stock of the situation and has directed Deputy Commissioner D S Grewal to take all necessary precautions.
