Panchayat presidents in UT refrain from convening Gram Sabha

Puducherry, Aug 15 (UNI) Several village panchayat presidents today refrained from convening the Gram Sabha to protest the territorial administration's failure to devolve powers to them.

Though the local body elections was held about two years ago, the administration was yet to devolve powers to the elected representatives.

As announced earlier, the village panchayat presidents kept away from convening the Gram Sabha.

Officials of the Local Administration department here told newspersons that the department was collecting details of those who failed to convene the Gram Sabha.

A report in this regard would be prepared and forwarded to the government. Based on the report action would be initiated against them, the officials said.
