D Sivraj threatens to commit suicide on Aug 15
Puducherry, Aug 14: President of the French India Viduthalai Kala Makkal Narppani Iyyakkam, Mr D Sivaraj on Thursday, Aug 14 threatened to commit suicide in front of the Kamaraj statue here on Friday, Aug 15 if the demands of the movement were not conceded by the government.
Led by Mr Sivaraj, the movement striving for the cause of the people who opted Indian citizenship at the time of the merger of Puducherry with the Indian union, was organising several agitations urging the administration to celebrate November one as the Independence Day of Puducherry instead of August 16 and August 16 as the Republic day of Puducherry, and provide financial assistance to the people who opted for Indian citizenship at the time of merger and a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 to them.
He had already announced that black flags would be hoisted here on August 16, if the government celebrates that day as the Independence Day of Puducherry.
However, after the announcement of self-immolation by Sivaraj, police took him into custody as a preventive measure.
