Tight security for peaceful I-Day celebrations
Shillong, Aug 13 (UNI) The Meghalaya government has stepped up security throughout the state for Independence Day celebrations in view of the boycott call given by five NE insurgent outfits.
''Preparations are in full swing for a peaceful Independence Day which will be celebrated throughout the state,'' an official said here today.
Official sources, however, said there was no threat from the HNLC in the state during August 15 and all preacutionary measures had been taken to foil possible attempts by militants to disrupt the day.
The HNLC has called a 24-hour bandh tomorrow like previous years and asked the people not to join in the celebration.
Security forces had already started maintaining close watch in the capital city and were carrying out checks in vehicles. Patroling by police had also been stepped up on roads and at vulnerable points and installations.
The government had appealed to the people to attend the celebration.
The government has also arranged a freedom run, ceremonial parade, an exhibition football match between Meghalaya XI and North-East XI, a cultural extravaganza and an I-Day rock music concert.
The cultural extravaganza will display dances by different communities of tribals and non-tribals, sources added.
