UNCTAD-IMC to hold meeting on Handloom exports on Aug 18

Mumbai, Aug 11 (UNI) The Indian Merchants' Chamber (IMC) would be organising a conference on Unctad Project: Realising Export Potentials of Handlooms here on August 18 to review the project jointly taken up with UNCTAD in the textile sector.

IMC in a relese here said Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Secretary General, UNCTAD, Geneva, would be delivering the keynote address.

IMC's tier-2 partners, who are helping in the implementation of the project in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Orrisa, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, would share their views on the progress of the project in various States.

Unctad, jointly with Department for International Development (DFID), UK and the Commerce Ministry, India had been implementing a project called ''Strategies and Preparedness for Trade and Globalization in India'' aimed at creation of awareness, trade-related capacity building and information dissemination in some selected sectors.

The conference, which is part of this project, aims to help India and other developing countries in properly assessing the opportunities and threats arising globalisation and trade liberalisation in the advent of WTO, and in articulating the steps needed to benefit from the emerging post-WTO trade environment.
