IED detected on Srinagar-airport road

Srinagar, Aug 7: A major tragedy was today averted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) when they detected a powerful 80 kg Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Srinagar-Airport road.

A CRPF spokesman told UNI that troops of 83 batallion in a roadside bunker at Hyderpora chowk noticed some suspicious movement near a dustbin at 0545 hrs.

A CRPF personnel was immediately rushed, where a tin filled with explosive with timer was found under the garbage, he said.

The spokesman said one person has been arrested from the spot by the CRPF and handed over to police.

He said the area has been cordoned off and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) has been summoned to defuse the IED, which could have been triggered even by mobile phone.

This was the powerful explosive which could have caused much damage to life and property, as the route remains busy throughout the day. Security forces convoy also use this route.
