Rahul Asthana, new chairman of Mumbai port Trust
Mumbai, Aug 6 (UNI) Mr Rahul Asthana has assumed charge as the Chairman of the Mumbai Port Trust.
He succeeds Ms Rani Jadhav, who retired on attaining the age of superannuation.
Mr Asthana, a 1978 batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre, was the Energy Secretary to the Government of Maharashtra, prior to taking up his present assignment. He has a wide experience in public service covering revenue administration, urban development, power and atomic energy. He has also worked as the Additional Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The 135 year old Mumbai Port Trust is one of the premier ports in the country, handling nearly 12 per cent of sea-borne trade of India. It handled 52.36 million tonnes of cargo traffic and 1.35 lakh TEU of container traffic. It was a port of call for more than 6,100 ships during 2007-08.
