Police Commissioner rules out any terror attack in explosion

Kolkata, Aug 3 (UNI) City Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty tonight ruled out any terror attack in an explosion that killed four people and injured six near Cossipur Gun&Shell factory under North Port city police station this evening.

Mr Chakraborty, who rushed with a huge police contingent at the site of explosion, said an abandoned shell, picked up by the rag pickers from a nearby factory, went off while being hammered on the metal killing four and wounded six.

He said there was no terror threat in the explosion, adding that it was an accident.

Mr Chakraborty said the victims, mostly involved in business of junks, were curious about the object and surrounded it, while it was being hammered on the metal to extract brass for selling.

He said the metal (shell) was picked up by a rag picker this morning from nearby Cossipur factory.

However, the explosion near the gun factory has taken the intelligence wings aback. The presence of the slum near the highly sensitive establishment has also raised many eyebrows on the safety of the arsenal factory.
