Major cities on high alert after Ahmedabad blasts

Thiruvananthapuram/Ernakulam/Mumbai/Tirupati, July 28 : Major cities have been on high alert over fears of more terror strikes after at least 46 people were killed in two days of bombings in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

Police conducted security checks and sounded a high alert in Kerala following the threats.

Reportedly, a television channel in Karnataka received an e-mail threatening that Kerala would be the next target of the terrorists.

Security has been beefed up in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam as vigil was heightened at bus stops, railway stations and airports.

Kerala's top police official convened a high-level meeting in the capital to take stock of the security situation.

"I had meeting with all my officers. All over Kerala the police is on the roads now. I need the cooperation of the people to spot out suspicious objects and suspicious strangers," said Raman Srivathsava, the state's Director General of Police (DGP).

Police were on their toes in Mumbai and security was also stepped in Tirupati.

In Madhya Pradesh, security was also placed on alert.

"Since we have exposed SIMI network and arrested 30 militants, therefore it is possible that we could be the next target. We are on alert in Indore and other places too," said state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

In an unexpected gesture, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the Chairman of the hardline faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) condemned the bomb blasts.

"All these explosions which took place either in Batmaloo, Bangalore or Hyderabad, and attacks on unarmed people, we have always condemned these attacks. Death of people in such attacks is a murder of humanity. The people who are involved in such attacks are enemies of humanity," said Geelani.
