Kolkata comes to standstill over Mamata meeting
Kolkata, Jul 21 (UNI) Life in the city today virtually came to a grinding halt as thousands of people gathered at Esplanade to attend a memorial meeting organsied by the Trinamool Congress to commemorate the death of 13 people in police firing 15-years- ago.
Trinamool supporters arrived from all corners of the state to the meeting venue to hear their party supremo Mamata Banerjee's speech, resulting in massive traffic snarls.
Only the Metro service functioned normally, while other modes of transport were almost immobilised following jamming of roads.
However, no untoward incident was reported in this connection so far.
Altogether 13 people were killed as police fired to disperse a crowd marching to the Writers' Buildings in a bid to gherao it in 1993.
