Two injured in encounter with cable thieves

Shillong, Jul 18 (UNI) A Meghalaya police constable and a cable thief were injured in an encounter in the wee hours today, while another robber was arrested with huge quantity of cable wires and a country made revolver, police said.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police AR Mawthoh said the incident occurred at around 0230 hours when the special police unit asked cable thieves to surrender themselves.

The armed cable thieves, who were stealing cable telephone cable wires from Mawpun area, instead of giving up suddenly opened fire towards policemen, injuring constable B Songthiang, he informed.

One of the armed robbers, who sustained bullet injury in the encounter, was arrested.

Both constable and the accused were nursing their injuries at a government hospital here.

Meanwhile, police arrested Samsumo Boro from Udalguri area of Assam from Polo Bazar and seized cable wires from his possession.
