Frustrated farmers 'peddle' turmeric on Aizawl roadside

Aizawl, Jul 16(UNI) The members of the farmers' association Zoram Kuthnathawktu Pawl today peddled huge quantity of home-grown turmeric at the roadsides here, frustrated with the government's alleged failure to purchase the product.

" The turmeric had been collected from different villages as the government failed to purchase it as promised. The product could be purchased at any rate from Re one to Rs one lakh per kg," the farmers said.

While the product was on sale near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Zodin Square for a few hours, an intervention by the police removed the turmeric and dispersed the farmers.

The state government had introduced cultivation of turmeric to hundreds of farmers as an alternative crop to rice in the wake of the cyclic bamboo flowering (mautam) which related rodent multiplication destroyed rice.

However, the state government has refused to purchase the entire products of the farmers.
