Birth anniversary of Kamaraj celebrated in TN

Chennai, Jul 15 (UNI) Launching of Free Banana Scheme for children in noon meal centres, floral tributes and functions in schools, marked the celebration of 106th birth anniversary of late Chief Minister and Congress leader K Kamaraj in Tamil Nadu today.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi launched the Free Banana Scheme for children in noon meal centres, after it was brought to the notice that children, who were vegetarians, do not take the free eggs supplied by the government thrice in a week.

The new scheme would benefit about 90 lakh children and cost the exchequer Rs 1.4 crore a year, the Chief Minister said after launching the scheme at a Corporation Model School here.

As the state government had declared the day as day of education development, students took out rallies and organised celebrations in schools.

On behalf of the DMK government, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi and Chennai Mayor M Subramaniam garlanded the statue of Kamaraj.

Congressmen celebrated the birth anniversary at the party headquarters Sathyamurthy Bhavan, where TNCC President K Thankgabalu, accompanied by senior leaders, including Legislature party leader D Sudarsanam paid floral tributes.

Elsewhere in the state, partymen distributed sweets and note books to the students.
