Rains cause extensive damage to Varahi Irrigation Project
Udupi, July 10 (UNI) The rains that lashed the coastal districts during the current monsoon had caused extensive damage due to severe land slide at several places on left canal of Varahi Irrigation project in Udupi district of Karnataka.
Severe land slide had occurred in the stretches at Halady, Kakkunje and Jamadagni causing large scale damage to the left canal of the project.
The stone and cement walls constructed to protect the canal in these stretches were extensively damaged and water had entered the nearby agricultural lands. Roads at these stretches have also been damaged.
Despite Government spending Rs 365 Crore so far the 25 year old project was yet to be completed.
