North-Eastern Handicrafts expo from tomorrow

Bangalore, Jul 9 (UNI) To promote and develop rich and traditional handicrafts and handloom products of North-Eastern states, an exhibition would be organised in the city from tomorrow.

Addressing newspersons here today, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited General Manager D C Borkotoky said the 14-day exhibition would showcase the enchanting and skillful traditional crafts of common people of the North Eastern region.

He said during the exhibition skillful and artistic work made of cane and bamboo crafts, handloom weaving, artistic textile weaving, wood carving embroidery, jewellery, brass and bell metal, basketry and some of the time-honoured traditional crafts would be on display.

The objective of the exhibition was mainly to promote sales of handicrafts, increase awareness in handicrafts, expose craftsmen to the maker and also to launch new products and designs for trial and promotion.

Replying to questions, Mr Borkotiky said over the years, the demand for Indian handicrfts and handloom products were increasing due to growing awareness created on the value-added products from India.

Last year, India exported handicrafts products worth over Rs 2,717 crore while the domestic sales stood at over Rs 19,000 crore, he said.
