TMMK appeals UPA to honour election promise

Tiruchirapalli, Jul 6 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) President M H Jawahirullah today appealed to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to honour the Congress' promise, made during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, to provide exclusive reservation for Muslims in education and jobs at national level.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the assurance was included in the UPA's Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

He also urged the Centre to place the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission's recommendations in Parliament and implement the same immediately.

The formal inauguration of the ''Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (MMK),'' the newly-floated political party of the TMMK, would take place along with the party's state conference at Chennai after the rainy season.

Efforts were on to register the MMK with the Election Commission, he said adding the party would contest in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

To a question, he said the Centre should drop the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.
