Poverty drives couple to suicide after poisoning kids

Berhampur, Jul 4 (UNI) A poverty-stricken couple today committed suicide by consuming poison in Polsara area of Ganjam district, about 55 km from here.

The couple also gave poison to their three children who were battling for their lives in the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.

Polsara Police station Officer-in-Charge Manoj Kumar Samanta said while the father Ashok Kumar Prusty(47) died at the Polsara Public Health Centre, his wife S Damayanti(40) died on way to the hospital.

Their two daughters S Srima(15) and S Resma(12) and son S Amril (10) were battling for life at the MKCG hospital.

Police said the couple took the extreme step unable to cope with acute poverty.

He said Prusty, who had taken huge loans from various places, had recently sold his house.
