Six killed in Puri Rath Yatra stampede

{image-puri rath yatra_04072008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Puri, July 4: At least six devotees were killed and 50 injured in a stampede here during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra, police said.

The incident occurred due to heavy rush of pilgrims who broke the barricade.The injured were taken to the Puri Hospital where six were declared dead on arrival. Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik visited the hospital and announced Rs one lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased. The Chief Minister said an administrative enquiry had been ordered into the scattering.
