State seeks report on the safety of school buildings

Bangalore, Jul 3 (UNI) In the wake of a teenager getting killed in a school roof collapse, the Karnataka Government today sought reports on the safety of all the schools buildings in the state within a month.

A 10th standard student had died when the roof of the school under repair collapsed in Bellary city on Tuesday.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said all District Deputy Directors of Instruction (DDPI) have been directed to submit a report on the safety of the school buildings in their area.

He said corrective measures would be initiated once report was received. Terming the Bellary incident as 'unfortunate', the Minister assured that the government would ensure that such incidents did not reoccur.

Replying to questions on the Karnataka High Court order striking down a government order making Kannada learning compulsory in unaided schools, he said the government will take 'corrective steps' after studying the judgment.

He said he would discuss the matter with Chief minister and leders of Kannada organisations on the fall out of the Court order against Kannada being made medium of instruction in all primary schools compulsory, he said.
