Marina beautification works to be completed in Jan '09
Chennai, July 12 (UNI) Come January 2009, Marina, the second largest beach in the world, would sport a new look, thanks to the beautification project.
The beautification works, being carried out at a cost of Rs 17.17 crore, would be completed in January next, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin said after inspecting the project.
As suggested by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the state government has undertaken the beautification project from Napier Bridge to the Lighthouse off the arterial Kamaraj Salai, covering 3.1 km.
Under the project, seating galleries would be built at 14 places on the stretch to enable people to enjoy the beauty of the beach. Fountains, lawns, modern toilets and pavements have also been proposed under the project.
Besides this, the stretch between War Memorial and Reserve Bank and the front view of the State Secretariat would also be beautified at a cost of Rs 6.57 crore.
Mr Stalin said works for setting up fountains in front of the Fort St George and War Memorial would be completed by September.
