Mortal remains of Kewal Krishan consigned to flames

Hoshiarpur, Jul 1 (UNI) The mortal remains of former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker and veteran Congress leader Kewal Krishan were consigned to flames with full state honours at Mukerian, 52 Km from here this afternoon.

His sons, Dr Avineesh Kumar and Rajneesh Kumar, lit the pyre amid chanting of hymns and a gun salute. The cremation was attended by top political leaders besides thousands of admirers and supporters of the late leader. Dr Kewal Krishan died following a massive heart attack yesterday.

Earlier wreaths were placed on the body, wrapped in the tricolour, by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, State Congress Chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, PPCC working President Mohinder Singh Kaypee and several Congress leaders, Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal and former Deputy Speaker Bir Divender Singh.

Wreaths were also laid on behalf of the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana by Chief Parliamentary Secretary Arunesh Shakar and Joint Development Commissioner H I S Grewal respectively.

Streams of people from different parts of the region came to the residence of Dr Kewal Krishan to pay tributes to him.
