Union HRD Ministry to set up NIT in Meghalaya
Shillong, Jun 28 (UNI) After IIM Shillong, the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry has agreed to set up a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Meghalaya, Meghalaya Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee said here today.
The Union Education Secretary had agreed to set up NIT in Shillong, provided the state government allotted adequate land for the purpose.
''The Centre wants the state government to provide sufficient land to construct the building and other infrastructure,'' Mr Chatterjee said.
Meanwhile, the Centre has agreed to compensate for the loss the Northeastern states would suffer by way of reduced seats during implementation of the new admission policy in the NITs.
''The states that do not have NIT or technical institutes will be compensated for by being allocated more seats,'' he said, adding that a decision to this effect was already taken by the Ministry during the meeting with secretaries and commissioners of different states and Union territories on Thursday.
