Manipur once again goes without newspapers
Imphal, Jun 26: For the third day in this month (June), no newspaper was published in Manipur today (June 26) after the decision not to publish dailies came from the entire journalist fraternity on the prevailing situation in the state for the last few days.
The mediapersons took this decision yesterday (June 25) at the Mnipur Press Club as militants were pressurising the journalists to publish their statements, while the state government had warned to take action against the newspapers if any news related to the insurgent groups was published. Earlier this month(June), there was no publication of newspapers for two days following threats by suspected militants.
The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) had been discussing the matter for the past few days, and the issue was discussed by the General Body meeting yesterday.
Another round of talks will be held today(June 26) with the state government officials and the AMWJU.
AMWJU sources said it will follow the rules laid down by the Press Council of India (PCI) and also strictly follow the guidelines framed by the AMWJU. It also appealed to all not to interfere in the freedom of press.
