Gorkhas recruit hundreds in Darjeeling hills

Darjeeling, June 24, 2008: The ethnic Gorkha Community in Darjeeling to press their demands for autonomy began a massive recruitment drive on Monday. At least 2,000 men and women will be recruited in the next few days. They would undergo martial arts training while some would be allowed to carry a traditional knife, kukris. The Gorkhas are demanding a separate state of 'Gorkhaland" be carved out of West Bengal to protect their culture and heritage.
