Hiranya remanded in police custody

Guwahati, Jun 23 (UNI) A local court today remanded overground ULFA leader and controversial businessmen Hiranya Saikia in four days of police custody.

He was produced before the court.

Police said Hiranya not only had serious link with the ULFA but was actually passing on instruction to the mid-rank cadres.

He was arrested yesterday from his business establishment. He is also a member of the Peoples Consultative Group (PCG) formed by the ULFA to act as a go between the Centre and the militant organization for a possible peace talk.

Meanwhile, ULFA Chairman Aurobindo Rajkhowa today termed his arrest as a sabotage by the state government for the second time to derail the peace process.

However, another organization Assam Public Works demanded that Hiranya Saikia be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) as he was not only working as overground operative but also extorting money from businessmen.
