Tibetan chant master Lama Tashi in favour of Beijing Olympics

Guwahati, Jun 22: Tibetan chant master Lama Tashi spoke in favour of Beijing Olympics during the World Music Day organised at Guwahati on Saturday, June 21. The only Grammy award nominee of the North East Lama Tashi, said that he is not opposed to Beijing Olympics though he does not favour the Chinese policy over Tibet.

"We have heard from his holiness again and again that Olympics should happen in Beijing and of course even my feeling is that it should be used properly so that it can help Chinese as well as the other people," said Tashi. Tibetans have been staging series of protests in the year of Beijing Olympics in an attempt to draw international attention towards their cause.

Tibetan diaspora all over the world are seeking an end to Chinese rule in Tibet and have staged a wave of protests across the world especially at Dharamsala, home of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and also the seat of Tibetan government-in-exile.

The World Music Day organised to celebrate the spirit of music saw the participation of most popular pop bands and singers of the northeast who conjured up magic through music at the festival.

The occasion was made even more special with the presence of renowned guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The Grammy award winner was all praise for the performers from northeast.

"I decide that I will take this to the world because I will be using them in my next album so I think it will be promoted abroad very nicely," said Bhatt.

Organised by the North East Zonal Cultural Centre and the Kohima-based Rattle and Hum Music Society, the festival was one of the biggest of its kind in the city.
