DMK Chief to spell stand on nuke deal, says party spokesman

Chennai, Jun 19 (UNI) The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a key constituent of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, today said party supremo and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would announce the party's stand on Indo-US Nuclear deal against the backdrop of stiff opposition to it by the Left parties.

Speaking to UNI, Mr T K S Elangovan, DMK spokesman and party secretary said the DMK had pledged its support to the deal and Mr Karunanidhi's poetess daughter Kanimozhi had made this clear in the Rajya Sabha recently.

But in the changed scenario now, with Left parties setting a deadline for the UPA government, it was for the party leader to announce the stand, he said.

Mr Elangovan further denied having categorically said, ''we will support the Congress on the issue.'' Asked about the stand taken by the Left parties, he said Mr Karunanidhi had already announced that divisions between the UPA and the Left would only benefit ''communal forces'' like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
