Couple held for cheating public

Puducherry, Jun 19 (UNI) Police today arrested a couple and their son who allegeldy cheated the public to the tune of Rs 15 lakh by running a chit fund at Velrampet here.

According to police, Janakiraman of Velrampet and his wife Kannammal, who were running a chit fund, failed to pay the money to those who won the chit on auction. Instead they purchased several properties with the money.

The public picketed the Mudaliarpet police, demanding that their money should be returned.

Meanwhile, police arrested the couple, along with their son Srinivasan and a traffic constable at Chellancherry near Reddichavady here and filed an FIR against them.

They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate I court and the Judge Dhanasekeran remanded them to 15 days of judicial custody.
