Councillor arrested on corruption charges, gets bail

Surat, Jun 19 (UNI) Yajuvendra Dubey, a BJP municipal councillor, was arrested today on charges of corruption and later released on bail by a city court.

According to a police complaint filed by Laxmi Shankere, a garment merchant, Yajuvendra Dubey, a BJP municipal councillor of ward no 36, Surat, had bought Sarees and dress material worth Rs 21,000 for his sister's marriage in Uttar Pradesh. He paid Rs 1,000 at that time and rest was to be paid after his return from the marriage.

But he allegedly refused to pay the rest of the money to the merchant.

Mr Shankere alleged that whenever he contacted Dubey to recover the money, he was badly treated and was threatened with dire consequences, saying that he was a BJP councillor.

Later, Mr Shankere lodged an oral complaint with Limbayat police in the city. But the police ignored his pleas for justice, he alleged.

Finally, he lodged a complaint with the city police commissioner and on his directions Limbayat police registered a complaint and arrested Dubey. He was produced in the city court, where he was relieved on bail.

From the court he went straight to a general body meeting of Surat Municipal corporation to elect the new mayor of the city.
