Patna, June 18 : The neighbourhood of Gardani Bagh near Patna is elated these days since a five-month-old calf has started giving milk. The awestruck residents believe its some miracle and have started worshipping the calf as reincarnation of Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth.
The calf was noticed to be not keeping well and a veterinarian was summoned to discover the reason. After diagnosing the calf, he suggested milking it.
Presto! To everyone's surprise, the calf was giving milk.
The calf belongs to Ranjit Yadav of the village.
"Three days back doctor visited to see the calf, as it was unwell. He asked me to milk the calf and I did so. The calf is yielding half-kilo of milk twice a day. The calf is just five to six months in age," said Ranjit.
The news about the calf milking spread all around from word and a stream of visitors started converging to watch this miracle.
Hindus consider cow as a revered animal so a five month old giving milk evoked pious feelings for it among the residents.
A cow usually attains maturity at the age of three years and after mating and the birth of a calf, its udders contain milk.
"We are worshipping it as Lakshmi (the Goddess). We consider cows to be Lakshmi. With this calf, the faith has doubled up," said Urmila Devi one of the neighbours of Ranjit Yadav.
Explaining the event Dr. Pankaj Kumar, a veterinarian said: "This is unusual because for milking you need to attain a certain age. However, at certain places in Bihar there are some breeds in which calves mature within one year. But this case of giving milk in five months without mating and conceiving is possible only because of hormonal imbalance."
But the religious-minded villagers don't buy this explanation. They just wish to believe it is nothing but a miracle that has taken place in their village. By Ajay Kumar
