Students go on rampage: Police fire in air to control mob
Krishnagar, Jun 17 (UNI) Police fired four rounds in the air and used lathis to quell a violent student group, which went on the rampage at the Ranaghat station in Nadia district today.
GRP in-charge Amitabh Ghosal said the trouble started when the down Santipur local's overhead wire got snapped and the train was delayed.
About a thousand students of Kalyani University, travelling in three local trains, who were to appear for their university Part-1 examination, got tense and started pelting stones at the stranded trains. They also broke the seats and smashed the window screens.
The GRP and the RPF tried to control the situation. But when they failed, police were sent from Ranaghat Police Station.
Police fired four rounds in the air and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob and brought the situation under control.
Train services were disrupted for about three hours.
Meanwhile, Kalyani University authorities said those who could not appear for today's test would be allowed to sit for exams some other day which would be notified later on.
