Torrents lash Guwahati

Guwahati, Jun 16 (UNI) A heavy afternoon shower threw life out of gear in the capital city of Assam with vast areas reeling under water.

All the low lying areas were under water, with hundreds of vehicles and thousands of commuters stranded midway, official sources said.

The sewage and drainage system of the city had been clogged, resulting in severe waterlogging.

With occupants of at least 5000 houses in the low-lying areas facing the wrath, they had been evacuated to higher places.

Guwahati Development Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had inspected the drainage system.

However, unabated encroachment in the surrounding hills had made it impossible to tackle the flood menace in Guwahati, sources added.
