Haryana Government asked to file report on Rohtak suicide case

Chandigarh, June 13 : Taking suo motu notice of a rape and suicide case of a 28-year old woman at Haryana Police headquarters in Panchkula by two constables, the Haryana High Court today asked the State government to file a detailed status report in the matter.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Permod Kohli and Rakesh Kumar Garg remarked, "When the protectors of the law become perpetrators of crime, the life of the common man becomes miserable."

Criticising the relief amount offered by Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda, the bench said, "The compensation announced for the minor daughters of the woman cannot retrieve the honour of the deceased or the family nor could it bring the victim back to life."

The court has ordered the investigating agency to expedite the probe and adjourned the hearing till July 2.

A local court on Thursday sent the two constables who are accused of raping the woman, to three days police custody.

Constables Balraj Singh and Silak Ram had allegedly raped Sarita in Rohtak on April 10. She committed suicide at the State police headquarters in Panchkula on June 9 expressing her frustration that no action has been taken against the accused.

The FIR in the rape case was registered 50 days after the rape incident.

The constables absconded after Sarita committed suicide but later surrendered before the police. Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda had announced a relief of Rs.500,000 to the victim's family.
