Chennai, June 12 : Activists of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Thursday wore skeleton costumes and staged demonstration outside American fast food outlet Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant in Chennai against the alleged abusive treatment of birds.

PETA activists stood outside KFC outlet holding placard reading 'I would rather be dead than eat KFC'.

PETA members also distributed leaflets to passers-by and gave details of how every bird killed for KFC has led a miserable life and met a frightening death.

"We are demonstrating to let people know that kind of cruelty infected by the KFC farms. Birds are raised in KFC farms, proper welfare standards are not being maintained by the farms. Farms are not being inspected; they are not being checked by proper authorities. As a result there birds are caged, birds are stacked in thousands of number," said Nikunj Sharma, campaign coordinator, PETA.

"Birds wings are broken. They are handled callously. They are killed in a very inhumane manner. So we are telling people to boycott KFC," he added.

On the other hand, KFC says it is committed to humane treatment of chickens.

Everyday about 2,000 to 2,500 customers walk in to the restaurant.
