BJP wants Bhagalpur compensation package to all riot victims
New Delhi, Jun 12 (UNI) Welcoming the Cabinet's decision to pay Rs 29.81 crore compensation package to the victims of the Bhagalpur communal violence in 1989-90, the BJP today said the government should give the same package to all victims of riots and genocide since 1984.
Asked about the party's reaction, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the Government cannot issue package on a selective basis like it had done in the case of victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Victims of all communal riots should be treated equally and not discriminated upon, he said.
According to the compensation package announced today, the families of 844 victims killed in riots would get Rs 3.5 lakh each.
This is in addition to the amount already paid by the Bihar Government.
Twenty two people, who received bullet injures in the riots, would receive Rs 1.25 lakh each, which would be reduced by the amount already paid by the State Government.
This would entail an expenditure of Rs 26.99 lakh for the injured, for whom the State Government had spent Rs 50,715.
