K'taka Govt ordres inquiry in to police firing on farmers

Bangalore, Jun 10 (UNI) The Karnataka Government today ordered an inquiry into today's police firing on agitating farmers in which one person was killed and four persons were injured in Haveri town.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today directed Amita Prasad, Regional Commissioner of Belgaum, to inquire into the incident and submit a report within 10 days.

He also announced a solatium of Rs two lakh to the dead person, Rs 50,000 to seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for others who sustained minor injuries in the firing.

"I appeal to the farmers to maintain calm as the government is making all out efforts to ensure sufficient supply of fertilisers and sowing seeds on a war footing," he said.

He also appealed the farmers to maintain peace and harmony and not to resort to violence.

Replying to a question he said the violent incident was instigated by elements which had hatched a conspiracy against the BJP government.
